Jewish Community Center of the North Shore announces Honorary Co-chairs

Honorary Co-chairs Marilyn Winick, Virginia Dodge, Kate Friedman, Alice Ossoff and Sara Winer.

Showhouse is one of our JCC signature events, raising necessary funds for the agency’s good works, and calling on the time, energy and talents of hundreds of volunteers who, with the help of professionals, work tirelessly to mount an extraordinary project.  The Center is indebted to all these outstanding women (and some wonderful men) who help make this event successful for the agency and for the community.
The Jewish Community Center of the North Shore is pleased to recognize “five worthy women” as the Honorary Co-Chairs of the 2007 Designer Showhouse, “Beachhurst: a cottage by the sea.”

Ginny Dodge
To know Ginny is to love her passion for the JCC, her generosity, her behind-the-scenes contributions as part of the Jewish Book Month committee, the Interfaith Seder, Six Million Memories project…and almost any committee that furthers the mission of the Center.  A current member of the Board of Directors, Ginny has a dry sense of humor and a sense of fair play that makes her loyal, witty, and an honorable and worthy woman.

Kate Friedman
There is no stopping Kate Friedman when she decides to roll up her sleeves!  As the co-chair of the two “Chai Time at the Ritz” events, Kate corralled a group of young leaders to break new ground…and mounted a spectacular black tie evening in Boston to raise needed funds for the Center.  Dedicated to the Center and its focus on children and young families, Kate’s passion and heart is evident in everything she does, and we are indeed lucky to count her as one of our worthy women.

Alice Ossoff
A true lady who is always (and we mean always) ready to help out. We are proud to honor Alice as a worthy woman.  As a long time chair of the Women’s Health Center, Volunteer co-chair of this year’s Showhouse House Operations Committee, active Jewish Book Month committee member, and a member of almost every Center committee over the years, Alice brings a willingness to make the world a better place to everything she does.  We are honored to recognize her and thank Joe for finding her and bringing her to Beverly, Massachusetts so we could count her as our own.

Sara Winer
Sara distinguishes herself by being among the most positive, warm and gracious persons the Center has ever had the good fortune to have in a leadership role.  As a co-chair of the Jewish Book Month Committee, co-chair of the Café Committee for this Showhouse, co-chair of the Development Committee and member of the Board of Directors, Sara brings dignity to her position and to the Center.  Because she embraces all those around her, we return the gesture and recognize her as a worthy and wonderful woman.

Marilyn Winick
Some folks think that Marilyn Winick’s middle name is “Mother”; others think she is a born nurturer, and still others think that she is Ms. Showhouse.  Well, they are all correct.  From the first Showhouse in 1984, Marilyn  has been either the leader or the co-leader of every single one since.  Her natural instinct to take care of her family, her friends, and those who work with her, combined with her extraordinary good sense, make her a worthy woman whom the Center is proud to recognize.

Thank you to each of you.  We recognize you.  We honor you.  And we love you for making our Center and our community a better place.

The Project:
More than 25 indoor and outdoor spaces will be transformed by some of New England’s most talented designers and craftspeople. This will be the Jewish Community Center of the North Shore’s Eighth Designer Showhouse.

The Proceeds:
Showhouse provides much needed funding for the Jewish Community Center’s vast array of programs and services for all ages.

The Mansion:
Beachhurst is one of the only 19th century summer estates of its kind on the North Shore, to which the wealthy traveled for a summer by the sea.  This mansion is the work of the eminent architect Richard Morris Hunt, known as the Dean  of American architects. Hunt designed many public buildings including the base of the Statue of Liberty and the National Observatory, and scores of mansions for the wealthy of Newport (The Breakers and Marble House) and New York City, including the Vanderbilts and the Astors Fifth Avenue  Mansions. Built in 1841 in the “Stick Style” for Boston merchant Jacob M. Haskell, the house has passed through succeeding generations of notables including Colonel Henry G. Parker, editor and owner of Boston’s Saturday Evening Gazette, and Israel Ratshesky and his wife Theresa, who purchased the house in 1903. Israel and his brother Abraham are founders of the US Trust Company.

Tickets:    Tickets to tour Beachhurst will be available at outlets throughout eastern Massachusetts and are available online at www.jccns.org. General Admission is $30 per person; $27 if purchased before May 5, 2007. Students $20 and Seniors $25. ALL TOURS ORIGINATE AT THE JCCNS. No one will be admitted to the house without
a timed bus ticket.

Preview Days:    Escorted tours for visiting groups (10 or less) are by advanced reservation prior to the public opening. Tickets are $35 per person. May 1, 2, 3. Please call for information.

Group Visits:
Groups are invited to purchase tickets in blocks of 20 or more at $25 each for use during regular Showhouse days. Group visits are not at reserved times and do not include a tour guide. Tickets may be purchased online or by phone.

Boutique:    Please visit the Showhouse Boutique located at the JCC during your visit. The Boutique features unique decorative items for home and family as well as unusual gifts and clothing. Open during Showhouse hours.

Café:    Stop by our Café for refreshments of all kinds, located just inside the Boutique at the JCC. Open during Showhouse daytime hours.

Volunteers:    Hundreds of volunteers are needed throughout Showhouse to ensure the success of this project. Please contact the Showhouse Office if you wish to become involved. Volunteers receive special training and a discounted admissions ticket to tour the house.

Parking:    THERE IS NO PARKING AT THE SHOWHOUSE. There is ample parking in several designated parking lots which will be marked and serviced by shuttle busses.
